This is a no-nonsense article on making email submission. Well worth the read. Here’s an excerpt…(I love this part).

“And if you’re one of these artists who’s managed to delude yourself into believing that complete strangers will be so taken with you and your art that they’ll supplicate themselves, implore you to tell them more, ask your prices (because they’re not in your email), sell them something, show you in their galleries, represent you, critique your work, or otherwise allow you to control the conversation and decide whether or not they’re worthy, then I might politely suggest that it’s time to wake up and kiss the ass of reality.”

I had a realization this morning as I was reading an article that was sent to me by my latest client. You know sometimes things just need to be said with a certain combination of words and then they hit home. This article was written by Chris Tyrell for Opus Framing and Art Supplies and is called Three Career Concerns. My realization came when reading part one Stories and Value, here is the part that got me…

The point of this exercise is that very often buyers of art (especially those who do not buy art often) want to have something to say about the work they buy because when they put their work on display in their homes or offices they want to have something intelligent to say in response to the compliments it generates. They value being able to respond by saying such things as, “the artist told me that …” or “the inspiration of the work is an interesting story….” Having an insightful anecdote or two to tell admirers of the purchased art provides a lot of the emotional benefit to making the purchase.

So check it out Kim is now talking about her art and you should too! Oh and did you know that all of Artbiz’s templates are blog ready (just thought I’d throw that plug in).

10 Tips and procedures for submitting your website to commercial galleries.

  1. Do your research. Find a gallery that fits your work.
  2. Respect and follow the submission guidelines that are posted on the gallery website.
  3. If  submission guidelines are not posted then contact the gallery and ask if they are accepting submissions and if they accept website submissions. The more we as artists ask for our websites to be used as a submission tool the more likely it will happen. Read the rest of this entry »
